It’s been a black week in Melbourne. Organisers vigorously spruiked Spring Fashion Week as the prelude to a season of girly ruffles, flowery prints and pretty colours, but it didn’t work. Melbourne’s favourite shade of chic dominated.
Black has persisted in more than half of both general spring and racewear collections, including yesterday’s, presented by Myer to a noisy 800 at the VRC’s annual Spring Lunch at Flemington.

“Light and refreshing,” said Myer’s fashion director Judy Coomber, introducing the show. “Lots of frills, lots of ruffles and tiers.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eleni Renton, the founder of Quintessentially Models, has called for grants to be pulled from next month’s event, following the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) decision to abandon plans for compulsory health checks for models.
In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Miss Renton, the founder of the first self-styled “ethical” modelling agency - described the BFC’s decision as “weak” and “embarrassing” and called on the London Development Agency (LDA) to withdraw its £4.5 million funding for the event.

“I am sorely disappointed by the decision, it was very weak of the BFC,” said Miss Renton. “I think the LDA should pull its funding for London Fashion Week. Sugarland and Miley Cyrus duked it out for the top spot on the album chart again, this time with different results. Last week’s winner, Cyrus, dropped to No. 2, selling 163,000 of her Breakout, a reasonable 56 percent decrease.
Sugarland, the Georgia-based country-rock duo, moved 171,000 units of Love on the Inside, earning the top spot, with a smaller decline of 45 percent.

The latter act had some help from a unique release strategy. Last week, they put out the higher-priced deluxe version of their album; this week, they had the lower-priced standard edition out as well, which appealed to more bargain-minded shoppers. (Nielsen SoundScan is counting both the deluxe and standard Sugarland CDs as one album, in this instance.) Read the rest of this entry »

By Hollywood profit standards, the cast and producers of the sequel to “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” admit they were surprised another film based on the hit book series was even made.
The sequel is released in the United States on Wednesday even though the original 2005 film made only $39 million in North America and $2.9 million overseas.

But with a loyal audience generated by fans of the best-selling young adult book series, guaranteed DVD sales and rising careers of some of the four main female actors, makers of the sequel are hoping that translates to greater success. Read the rest of this entry »
