It was one of the most hotly contested development battles of 2004. As the real estate market soared, developer Howard Rooks,
builder Pat Ball and architect Guy Peterson proposed a 23-house development on Bay Shore Road to be called The Houses of Indian Beach.
Although some neighbors approved, others vehemently opposed the project because the tract of land contained an old forest. The opponents sought preservation of the woods.
After months of preparation and hours of testimony before the planning board and the Sarasota City Commission, the developers won approval.(Chinook indian houses)
Then the real estate market tanked. At a time when very little has been selling, marketing a development of modernist houses has proven to be even more difficult.
So the developers sought city commission approval to changed the name of the project to Casa Museo, dropping the stipulation that all the houses be Peterson-designed moderns. Now, none of them do. It is expected that the replacement house designs will feature traditional architecture. Chinook indian houses
