Coping with 9-to-5 life is at the core of two of this year’s top contenders. AMC’s “Mad Men,” a gorgeously retro re-creation of a 1960s advertising agency, is the drama standout with 16 nominations.
NBC’s “30 Rock,” a smart, irreverent peek inside show-biz workplace craziness, is the king of comedy with 17 nods.
“Madmen cast Actors, from left to right, John Slattery, John Hamm, Vincent Kartheiser and Rich Sommer arrive at the honoring of nominees for outstanding writing for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences along with the Writer’s Peer Group Executive Committee, Thursday, September 18, 2008, in Los Angeles.”
Coincidence? Maybe. But TV often reflects the broader social landscape, and if there’s anything preoccupying us in this reeling economy, it’s jobs, jobs, jobs.
The leader of the pack, however, is HBO’s historical miniseries “John Adams” with 23 nominations. Still, he was a workhorse president who clocked plenty of hours at the founding of the nation.
