EDT Wednesday, scientists on the Franco-Swiss border will flip the switch on the Large Hadron Collider, a 17-mile underground ring where subatomic particles will be accelerated to astonishing speeds and then smashed into each other.
The £5billion Large Hadron Collider aims to recreate the conditions moments after the Big Bang that created the universe.
To do this, a massive 27km tunnel has been constructed under countryside in France and Switzerland near Geneva, which will be used to smash protons together at 99.99 per cent of the speed of light.

Ugh. Isn’t there more important things for science to do, like cure cancer for instance, than spend billions of dollars on a recreation that supposedly created the earth and universe. And there is no 100% guarantee that they will never destroy earth with this damn machine. Although they could. Today I am totally disappointed in science.
Gosh, it’s just a big atom smasher, and the possibility of something dangerous to happen is too small for that something to happen
If it would have been real risk, scientists would inform us, or take measures against it, or, after all, never would have thought of taking this idea to reality. So stop worrying, listen to common sense and do not let this rumor by fools take over your mind. There are very little people, who really believe it’s dangerous - http://www.votetheday.com/polls/worlds-largest-particle-accelerator-experiment-214/, but looks like panic is a very hazardous thing, ha?
Hum gostei dessa maquina muito boa
J, don’t panic. where are those words from (”Isn’t there more important things for science to do, like cure cancer”)? i’ve read almost the same words for the third time already
I think its just that people care alot more about curing a deadly disease like cancer than uncovering the secrets of the universe. They’ve been secrets since the beginning of time, they aren’t about to reveal themselves just cause 9,000 physicists built a particle accelerator, lol. Seriously, you know that over 10 billion dollars went into this project? They couldn’t think of anything better to spend the money on. I know I could lol.
Psh. Who wants to know the secrets of the universe… [/sarcasm]
OK, partially i agree, but i still think that this experiment is required. About curing cancer - i think every man ill with his doctor is participating in search for cure and i think worldwide those are greater money than 10 bilion dollars each year. The search for higgs could be done by nobody without LHC, this is more fundamental task. And about secrets - the atom secret is also the secret since the beginning of universe, but currently it is the only alternative (to oil) source of large amounts of energy. And forming complete theory could help with finally getting energy from thermonuclear reactions which are only in progress (ever heard about ITER?)
This experiment is stupid. There willing to risk everybodys lives to unravle the secrets of the so called universe. You know if god wanted you to know what happend he wouldent have made it a secret. Dont they have a better way to spent there time the risking the damn earth and everyone in it!!!
