Karl Lagerfeld, designer of Fendi among the many other jobs he holds, always appears to have fun with his shows – adding something theatrical even in Milan, where typically, the clothes are the show.
Fendi opened with a stage set – a winter forest of leafless trees through which the models entered the catwalk. This began to make sense when, part way through the show, tops and jackets emerged with the appearance of dry leaves fluttering from necks and shoulders.
Actually, the effect came from fabric carefully cut like fall leaves. There were also furry skirts and an extraordinary top that mimicked the look of elaborate feathers. It was forest creatures tiptoeing through the winter woods.
Fendi, though, is all about the bags and belts, and there were plenty to choose from. Belts cinched the waists of bulky sweaters as well as coats. There were big big bags – one as big as a suitcase.
