On the radar: Belts over everything

The waist is paramount this season. That means we’ll be belting up and over, writes Rachel Wells.
From a safe distance, fashion seems like fun - all pretty tea dresses, denim flares and platform heels. But up close, it can be hard work.
See, it’s not nearly enough just to “own” the requisite on-trend garments - you’re supposed to wear them a certain way, too.
This isn’t a new phenomenon, by any means. It’s been happening for decades, centuries even.
When I was at school, it wasn’t enough to wear the regulatory gingham-check school dress, white socks and T-bars - they had to be worn a certain way.
In 1988, that meant dress hemmed to mid-thigh and two pairs of white socks scrunched meticulously to mid-calf.
Disobey these rules by wearing your dress even an inch longer, or shorter, for that matter, or, God forbid, your socks pulled taut to the knee and your fashion cred was all but over.
More recent examples include last winter’s trend for wearing knee-high boots over skinny jeans; or the trend a few seasons earlier for wearing cowboy boots with dresses - a look long superseded by opaques and pumps.
The newest “way-to-wear-it” trend comes in the form of belts worn over - yes, over -coats and cardigans.
It’s a look best explained by fashion’s revolt against the voluminous, waistless silhouettes that dominated recent seasons and our current preoccupation with a tailored silhouette.
So fierce is the backlash against smocks that being “nipped-in” applies even when you’re wearing a jacket or overcoat. /smh.com.au
