Betsey Johnson’s 30th anniversary show a big party at New York fashion week

Betsey Johnson threw a slamming 30th birthday party for her line on Monday, showing off her “Favourite Oldies,” ranging from a 1978 diagonal striped one-piece bathing suit to a 1982 shirt with skulls covering it.

But first, the fall ‘08 looks - a fun and flirty collection not meant for the wide of hip. Johnson described the theme as a “a Hollywood pinup girl meets the black, beat Kerouac in the basement parlour.”

For emphasis, she decorated with bubble gum cigarettes and Beat Chick matches.

Most of the clothing was unforgiving - catsuits that show every bump, animal print leggings with a wool twill blazer barely covering the rear, denim mini-shorts that were paired with a feather adorned V-neck fringey top.

Even a sweater dress had figure-unflattering horizontal stripes.

“It’s tighter and sexier, but I still believe the girl brings the sex to the clothes,” says Johnson. “You won’t look sexy in a tight, below-the-knee skirt if you don’t feel good in it.”

Looks included an off-the-shoulder red blouse with polka dots paired with a red flowy skirt with suspenders.

Yellow mid-thigh shorts were paired with a yellow-trimmed black blouse with loose sleeves and thigh-high striped socks.

When the fall ‘08 show was over, bongo players were replaced with a backdrop of a large cupcake with “30″ on it.

Models then came out wearing retro: a flower-power baby doll dress from 1979, a short trapeze dress with buttons down the front covered with toys paired with thigh-high striped socks from 1984 and red casual strapless slim dress with guns from 1985.  /canadianpress.google.com
