High street retailers have been forced to slash prices earlier than ever before in a desperate bid to lure shoppers into their stores after a disastrous start to the festive season.
Fashion retailer French Connection has launched a 50 per cent off sale, while Morgan and Faith, the fashion and shoe retailers, are offering discounts of up to 65 and 60 per cent respectively.
Debenhams, the department store, is selling a range of Christmas gifts and partywear at half price.
New Look is also selling selected partywear at half price.
This weekend Marks & Spencer has launched a wide-ranging promotion on alcohol to drive shoppers into its stores.
On Thursday Laura Ashley, the fashion and furniture retailer, launched a 50 per cent off sale.
The promotions - some planned in advance and some imposed by nervous executives - underline just how difficult trading is this Christmas. /telegraph.co.uk
