The new year’s practically banging on our doors and the fashionistas would be all ready to update their wardrobe.

Thankfully, the fash frat assures that you needn’t trash all that you bought last year to accommodate the slew of new designs, as certain styles – the kalidar, empire cuts and silhouettes will continue to rule this year.

Brighter side of fashion
Manish Malhotra opines that 2008 will be a riot of colours: “I’m expecting a lot from 2008 in terms of colours. Off-whites will definitely be out.”

“Finally, by God’s grace, balloon skirts are out,” sighs Malhotra while advising one to trash them, though those who stocked up on velvet can keep them as the material will be seen in 2008 as well.

    Amidst dresses, volume, layers, fur trims and the eternal question of metallic versus floral prints, the world of fashion is always on the lookout for something new. New designs, newer fads…

    what next is the question that keeps this industry in a state of constant flux.

    And after decades of seeing a few established names grow bigger and better, the Indian fashion industry found a handful of new names in 2007 who the seniors agreed could be the next big things.

    Hitherto unknown, they came out from the cold to make their mark.

    Celebrate the sartorial circus that took us all on a spin!

    WHAT WAS THAT A wise soul once said? That the more things change the more they remain the same? This year, fashion has appeared to live by that adage.

    It was such a blast from the past! Those of us who had saved our skinny jeans on the loft are happy to dust off the mothballs and air them out again — but, alas, do we still fit into them!

    Fashion in 2007

    Turbulence, with all its ups and downs marked the fashion world in 2007.

    On the upside came Kate Moss’s Topshop range.

    On the down, Isabella Blow’s death from an overdose and the death of Uruguayan model Eliana Ramos from anorexia.

    Kate Moss’ collection for Topshop was one of the most highly anticipated collections to hit the high street.

    May 1st, fashionistas from everywhere flocked to Topshop’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street for the opening. Kate Moss was there too.

    For a Christmas Day treat, the 10,000-plus participants at the Gitanjali Luxury Style Fest 2007 that concluded on Tuesday at Mahalaxmi Racecourse.

    It could not have asked for anything as scintillating as fashion shows by JJ Valaya, Varun Bahl, Surily Goel and Ranna Gill.

    But that is what Gitanjali Group chairman Mehul Choksi gave them in addition to the opportunity to get a closer look at luxury brands and ensembles by the designers in exhibition lounges and the fashion show area.

    Only Santa Claus was missing!
