From inspiring some of the world’s top designers to developing its own fashion scene, India is the place to watch.
Matthew Williamson, Diane von Furstenberg, Jean Paul Gaultier and Collette Dinnigan are regular visitors to the subcontinent and in September international fashion bible Vogue launched Vogue India, featuring Australian model Gemma Ward on the cover.
With a growing middle class (the country has more than 1 million households with an annual income of at least $100,000, according to a survey last year), India’s demographic is changing rapidly.
Well-heeled Indians have developed a healthy appetite for consumerism and the world’s top fashion labels are only too happy to satiate them, with Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Christian Dior and Gucci boutiques dotted across the country.
Everyone, it appears, agrees that India is experiencing a luxury goods boom. /smh.com.au
