1956: Jessie Covington Dent approaches John H. Johnson, publisher, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson Publishing Co., about sponsoring a mini-fashion show to raise money for the Women’s Auxiliary of Flint-Goodrich Hospital in New Orleans.
1958: Johnson and his wife, Eunice W. Johnson, select 10 cities nationwide to host the Ebony Fashion Fair. The theme is “Ebony Fashion Fair Around the Clock,” and the show featured four female models.
1967: Eunice Johnson finds Richard Roundtree working as a salesman in a haberdashery in New York. Roundtree joins the Fashion Fair and later goes on to a successful acting career.
1975: Model and former Fashion Fair commentator Shayla Simpson stuns audiences by modeling designer Rudi Gernreich’s two-piece swimming suit thong.
1999: Jada Collins joins the show as a model and becomes Ebony Fashion Fair commentator the following year
2006: The Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. begins hosting the Ebony Fashion Fair in Detroit.
2007: Ebony Fashion Fair celebrates its 50th anniversary. /ebonyfashionfair.com
