Students protest outside Fashion Week venue
On Thursday 35 fashion design students and their models from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) held a silent protest outside the Cape Town Fashion Week venue,
the International Convention Centre, to protest their exclusion from the four-day event.
“Joburg Fashion Week started because of young designers and now they’re just cutting us out? Why have we been excluded?” said third-year student Nadia Lemmer.
As Copenhagen Fashion Week gets into its stride, the designers in South Africa are looking to give Europe a run for its money at Cape Town Fashion Week, which is presented by African Fashion International (AFI).
Established designers showing include Gideon, Kluk CGdT, Gavin Rajah and Habits by Jenny Le Roux, while Russian guest designer Julia Dalakian will also present her spring/summer 2008 collection as part of an ongoing exchange with Russian Fashion Week. You don’t need to jump! For the first time, the Cape Town Fashion Council will host an industry conference with the aim of identifying the issues facing its young fashion talent. “The association with the Cape Town Fashion Council is an important part of the strong growth and evolution of the event,” explains AFI chairperson, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.
“With a leadership that includes some of South Africa’s most influential fashion entrepreneurs, experts and designers, the involvement of the organisation will provide a further boost to the event’s focus on business development for South African designers.” FASHION WEEK/TONIGT
